The changes we have seen in our son and our family are absolutely phenomenal since we started vision therapy at Achievers Unlimited.    Our son has gained awareness regarding his body.  He is aware of what his mind wants to do and what his body is actually doing.   He can now follow three step directions on a regular basis and sometimes even four step directions. This alone has made our family life much easier.  When we started at Achievers, he had a hard time following one or two step directions. Now that he is able to follow directions and stay focused our home just seems to run so much smoother.

The most amazing thing that has changed since starting vision therapy at Achievers is his ability to read and his newfound love of reading.  When it is time for homework, reading is the first thing he wants to do.  He comes to the breakfast table with a book in hand and reads while he is eating.  He now takes a book along to school to read in the morning while he is waiting for the bell to ring to be sent to his room.  This is absolutely astonishing considering that since he has been a baby he has not been able to tolerate looking at books. Now suddenly this is one of his favorite things to do.  It is such a relief to be able to read with him and he actually enjoys and looks forward to this without having a battle and trying to make him do it. The stress level at homework time has gone down to zero.

He loves to play baseball. He said now he should be able to see the baseball and hopes to hit a home run this year!

Thank you so much for making his world better and easier, and for making our family life smoother.

My name is Patrick and I came to Achievers Unlimited when I was in fourth grade. I was getting average grades in most of my classes and failing a couple as well. I was tested for attention deficit disorder when my teachers said I was having problems not paying attention. My parents were doing everything in their power to help me, but no one knew why I was having such trouble.

I had always had problems reading and not remembering what I had read. My handwriting was deplorable. I would get excited when I would just write one letter like my friends did. Teachers would have trouble correcting my work and tests. I often had to stay in a t recess to do things orally. That only fueled the fire because without recess there was not hope for me to learn or accomplish anything.

When we were out of coloring and one word answers in the third and fourth grades the problem truly presented itself. All the other kids were developing mentally faster. For two years my Mom and Dad struggled to find a solution to my problem. They tried doctors, glasses, and punishment for not completing assignments. Nothing worked.

What no one understood is that when I sat to do my homework. I would wander off. When I could concentrate, I would get massive headaches and become uncomfortably hot and sweaty. That prevented me from doing it.

I would go to learning centers after school to help me. I would be in a controlled environment and still I struggled immensely. I just couldn't stay on task or be comfortable when I was. The learning center did everything they could, but they also ran out of options. All I saw them do was give me more homework that I couldn’t accomplish.

After searching and searching for the answer my parents started to think I was just plain lazy. They became frustrated when I would insist I didn’t feel lazy in class or at home. My Mom somehow found out about Achievers Unlimited which was my last hope. If I didn’t figure it out now, I would have an impossible time catching up in fifth grade and middle school. I went to Achievers expecting more tests and doctors, but what I found were games. I met a woman who took me into a big room filled with wheels, markers, and pencils. It looked like fun, unlike machines and censors on your head. They said that my eyes did not work together which was why I was having all this trouble. After working to increase eye flexibility, they started working together.

It took time and effort, but after a while my grades went from C’s to A's. I didn’t have trouble concentrating and no sweating. I could finally work to my full potential. After my last visit my Mom cried when she heard the progress I had made on my tests. I had gone from about 60% to 100%. I was happy, my parents were happy, and my grades were great.

Achievers’ gives you your ability to learn and be successful. They give you self confidence, but they also help you know your body. Now when I started to get headaches and my eyes would feel funny again I knew my eyes needed a tune up. I promptly got one and my eyes returned to normal. I then felt better and ready to move on.

Now I am a freshman in college with an academic scholarship, majoring in psychology. I can’t say I owe it all to Achievers Unlimited because my Mom and Dad also had a lot to do with it. I also still needed to work hard. Achievers Unlimited is not the quick fix of some places or drugs, but they will sort you out and if you keep up with your exercises they will keep you sorted. They saved me from a gloomy future, to one with endless possibilities.

If you are contemplating sending your child to Achievers I urge you to do so. It can and will change their lives. If you are in the program, do your exercises and it will pay off in the future. You can be a success story and once you are finished you most surely will be. You can actually do anything and be whatever you want to be. Achievers Unlimited will get you to the door, your parents can open it, and you can walk through it to a world of endless possibilities.

Upon arriving at Achievers Unlimited, I was convinced that my son had astigmatism in both eyes. After all, I had taken him to a pediatric ophthalmologist and his school had run a battery of diagnostic test. His reading problems were attributed to social anxiety and astigmatism. He even had an IEP in place, but nothing really seemed to help him improve at school. He showed little to no progress in reading and spelling. After a functional vision therapy screening, he returned to his classroom and I watched amazing changes take place.

At Achievers, he was found to have limited depth perception which affected his ability to see the page, numbers, and letters. The first recommendation was to have him stop wearing his glasses. We implemented this immediately.  After he removed the glasses, his teacher started implementation of a binder for a slanted workspace while he did school work, so that his work was only eye to elbow distance away. Furthermore, movement breaks (juggling and dribbling) were incorporated into his classroom routine.  Both the teacher and I noticed immediate and drastic improvement in everything from academics to attitude.

He is a more relaxed student and less afraid to read in class. His penmanship continues to improve, with written words being neater and less slanted. His reading is more fluent, and thanks to the Fernald method, learning to spell is less of a challenge for him. He still has a long way to go but as we share information with his teacher, and his teacher with us, we will help him to be as successful as possible.

We are really pleased with our daughter’s progress and look forward to her continuing to grow “visually”.  Here are my observations so far.

Areas of Concern:

  • Reading fluency
  • Desire to read
  • Reading comprehension
  • Attention to detail in books and surroundings
  • Difficulty finding lost items
  • Misplacing items and unable to look for or remember where items are
  • Organizational skills: play skills, personal belongings
  • Disorganized, constantly losing items
  • Falling constantly over “nothing”, injuring self frequently
  • Body in space: grabbing items from others, impulsive, too close to others
  • Body in constant motion during story time
  • Weakness in vocabulary, expressive language, word retrieval skills inconsistent printing skills’
  • Lack of interest in puzzles, legos, matchboxes, etc.
  • Easily distracted and very interested in others business
  • Bossy
  • Difficulty walking in line at school: bumping into objects, slipping and falling, walking into peers

Observations after 6 sessions of vision therapy:

  • Sudden increased desire to read independently and to family members
  • Increased auditory comprehension skills when listening to more age appropriate stories
  • Sits still and answers comprehension questions when read too
  • Asks for unfamiliar vocabulary words to be defined rather than faking that she understands
  • Listening skills have improved but need a lot more work.
  • Increase in reading comprehension and more interested in learning new vocabulary words when she is reading
  • Beginning to sequence a story with details and retell.
  • Significantly decreased personal injuries over small things, however, she has increased injuring herself over larger things (i.e. falling off her bike, falling downstairs, stubbing toes)
  • Sudden interest in playing with matchbox cars: sequential play observed with doss and other toys
  • Demonstrating awareness of and importance of sequentially expressing herself with details in a variety of settings.
  • When she is looking for lost items she stands in one place and uses her eyes to locate objects. (Note: I have observed her eyes really moving and tracking rather than her head and body moving.
  • Outbursts of frustration in reading and other areas have decreased.

Goals:

  • Continue to increase auditory processing skills when listening to multi-step directions
  • Multi-tasking
