Visual/Perceptual Components:

Vision is a set of skills and abilities, including 20/20 eyesight, that allows our eyes to function effectively with our body and brain. By the age of two, children should be able to--

  • Fixate on an object
  • Have the balance skills to sit up, stand and walk
  • Respond to Social Interaction
  • Problem Solve
  • Explore cause and effect
  • Grasp and manipulate objects
  • Look for lost items
  • Follow an object from any angle
  • See smaller and smaller objects from farther and farther away
  • Use the eyes, without moving the head, to track smaller objects over a longer period of time
  • Judge distances accurately
  • Shift eyes from one place to another
  • Be able to stop and start the body on command
  • Scribbles
  • Eyes look

Watch for the following developmental warning signs:

  • Red eyes, eye rubbing, closing or covering one eye, frequent sties
  • Child doesn’t move, moves all the time, or doesn’t move all body parts
  • Head too close or tilted when looking at books, writing/ coloring, or watching TV
  • Does not demand to cut, color, and paste by age 4
  • Not interested in balls and balloons
  • Poorly coordinated for age
  • Bumps into things in familiar surroundings
  • Walked without creeping or crawling
  • Content not to move for long periods of time
  • Eyes not look straight
  • Head movement rather than eye movement
  • Spending extended time with exersaucers, jumpers or swings.

How We Address These Challenges:

These skills can be taught:

  • Balance and gross and fine motor skills
  • Eye-hand/Eye-foot coordination (throw-catch-kick)
  • Fixate and track objects (Look at and follow)
  • Understanding concepts like stop and start.
  • Laterality and directionality to reduce the number of reversals
  • Acuity
  • Eyes working as a team (eyes look straight)
  • Figure ground to deal with crowded or busy area
  • Peripheral awareness of objects and people around you while attending to a task
  • Visual attention and stamina
  • Visual discrimination to see small differences
  • Visual memory to remember what is seen
  • Visual closure to see a whole when only a part is revealed
  • Spatial relationships
